African descendant people developed a cultural identity and practices based on their history in geographic regions throughout North America, The Caribbean, Central and South America, and even Africa. These practices developed during periods of enslavement, colonization, and social-political transitions, all based on African cultural retentions and, importantly, the creolization of those retentions.
